CLASS D Instruction Permit Information
✔ Must be at least 15 years of age to obtain
✔ If between ages 15-18, must have completed the appropriate amount of classroom instruction and be enrolled in behind-the-wheel instruction
✔ If 18 and under, you must practice driving with a licensed adult driver for at least six months and be age 16 before a driving test can be taken.
✔ If 19 and older, you must practice driving with an adult licensed driver for at least three months before taking a driving test.
✔ Road driving test are scheduled online and not through the Preston DMV office.
Transferring an Out-Of-State License – As of August 1, 2023
✔ If you are 21 and over and have a valid, unexpired driver’s license from another U.S. state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Virgin Islands, Guam, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Northern Mariana or Canada you do not need to take a written test about Minnesota driving laws and regulations.
✔ If you are UNDER 21 you WILL need to take a written test about Minnesota driving laws and regulations.
✔ If your license has been expired for more than one year, you must pass a road test.
✔ If you have moved from a country other than the ones listed above, you must pass both the written and road tests.
Types of Driver’s Licenses Available
A Class D License is a regular driver’s license required to operate a vehicle weighing 26,000 pounds or less. It is the most common type of driver’s license.
Every person who operates a motorcycle on public roads in Minnesota must have a valid driver’s license with the appropriate instruction permit or license endorsement. Motorcyclists must carry these documents with them when riding on public roadways.
A Class A License is required to drive any vehicle towing a unit of more than 10,000 pounds Gross Vehicle Weight Rating with a gross combination weight rating (truck plus trailer) over 26,000 pounds.
A Class B License is required to drive any single-unit vehicle that is over 26,000 pounds Gross Vehicle Weight Rating.
A Class C License is required to drive a single-unit vehicle, 26,000 pounds Gross Vehicle Weight Rating or less, with one or more endorsement for hazardous materials, passenger, or school bus (with passenger endorsement).
