Class D Knowledge Test

You can now take your Class D Permit Knowlede Test in Preston.

No Appointment Needed

CLASS D Knowledge Test

✔ Testing available in Preston from 8:30-11:30am and 1-4pm.
✔ No appointment needed
✔ If under 18, bring your Blue Course Completion Card, Certified Birth Certificate and Social Security Card. Laminated Documents will not be accepted.
✔ If over 18, bring your Certified Birth Certificate and Social Security Card. Laminated Documents will not be accepted.
✔ If transferring an Out-Of-State License, bring a Certified Birth Certificate, Any/All Certified Name Change Documents (If there are any), Social Security Card and Out-Of-State License. Laminated Documents will not be accepted.

CLASS D Instruction Permit Information

✔ Must be at least 15 years of age to obtain
✔ If between ages 15-18, must have completed the appropriate amount of classroom instruction and be enrolled in behind-the-wheel instruction
✔ If 18 and under, you must practice driving with a licensed adult driver for at least six months and be age 16 before a driving test can be taken.
✔ If 19 and older, you must practice driving with an adult licensed driver for at least three months before taking a driving test.
✔ Road driving test are scheduled online and not through the Preston DMV office.

Types of Driver’s Licenses Available

Class D

A Class D License is a regular driver’s license required to operate a vehicle weighing 26,000 pounds or less. It is the most common type of driver’s license.

Motorcycle

Every person who operates a motorcycle on public roads in Minnesota must have a valid driver’s license with the appropriate instruction permit or license endorsement. Motorcyclists must carry these documents with them when riding on public roadways.

Class A
Commercial Driver

A Class A License is required to drive any vehicle towing a unit of more than 10,000 pounds Gross Vehicle Weight Rating with a gross combination weight rating (truck plus trailer) over 26,000 pounds.

Class B
Commercial Driver

A Class B License is required to drive any single-unit vehicle that is over 26,000 pounds Gross Vehicle Weight Rating.

Class C
Commercial Driver

A Class C License is required to drive a single-unit vehicle, 26,000 pounds Gross Vehicle Weight Rating or less, with one or more endorsement for hazardous materials, passenger, or school bus (with passenger endorsement).
